The Bond, End to End

One bond from lead to resolution, across four lanes. Read down a column to see everything happening at one moment. Read across the tools lane to see how much of it Timshel carries.

Phase 1 stages 1 to 7 and 12 Phase 2 stages 8 to 11, the distress path Timshel our system Dashed stays outside Timshel Most bonds run 1 to 7 then straight to 12. Stages 8 to 11 are the exception path, and they are where the money is.

Status of bondand the customer relationship

No bond

Someone in custody who may become a client. No liability, no customer.

Executed

Defendant released. Liability begins the moment the agent signs, not when we record it. Customer relationship starts here.

On risk, unrecorded

We are liable and the office does not know it yet.

The gap between stage 2 and stage 4 is the only period where nobody in the building can see the exposure.

On the books

Recorded but unverified. Court date known or being looked up. Premium path decided: paid or financed.

Verified

Paperwork complete, numbers match. Ready to report.

Fully accounted

On the surety's books. Power reconciled and paid for. Agent paid. Financing invoiced.

Live liability

Defendant appearing. Customer current, or aging on a payment plan. This state lasts months and is where most bonds spend their life.

At risk

Defendant did not appear. Two independent facts to establish: no appearance, and whether a warrant issued.

Forfeited

Money is owed to the court. Every clock starts on the order date. Customer is now billed for the full amount plus fees.

90 days to pay or the surety and every agent are suspended statewide.

Locating

Field team out. Reinstatement window closing. Customer relationship usually adversarial by now.

Arguing

Asking the court to give the bond back, on the record we built during stages 7 through 10.

Closed

Exonerated, reinstated and discharged, discharged with penalty, or paid and lost. Collateral returned. The receivable can outlive the bond by years.

Three things this view makes obvious

  • Stage 3 is a blind spot. Between the agent signing and the office recording, MWB carries liability nobody can see. Nothing measures how long that lasts today.
  • Stage 7 is almost the whole life of a bond, and it is one person's job. Four of Sarah's daily tasks live in a single column.
  • Stage 11 pays for stages 7 through 10. The petition is only as good as the record, and the record is built months earlier by people who are not thinking about petitions.

Where the lanes disagree

  • The status lane moves on court time. The people lane moves on office time, weekly cycles and the 5th of the month. Those two rhythms never line up, which is why deadlines get discovered rather than anticipated.
  • The tools lane is the honest one. Anywhere it shows three or four tools in one column, someone is retyping.
  • Stage 12 does not actually end the customer relationship. The receivable can run for years after the bond is closed, on a completely separate track.
